The buzz about The Game Awards has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team might be crafting a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, branching plots, and flexible progression—traits that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities that are viable by choosing a distinct build with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously flexible, letting players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in diverse methods, frequently in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
