Right-leaning reactions to the partial disclosure of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Administration Defends Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Administration officials defended the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been this open with the public about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter outlining the censorship procedure.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While Trump's identity and image are visible in some of the materials, the widespread redactions raise serious questions about what may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans immediately called for increased transparency.
“The public are furious and walking away,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the law, and implied that a subsequent legislature may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s document release egregiously does not comply with both the intent and the wording of the act,” he added.
Some Rightwing Figures Swing In Support of the Disclosure
But, a segment of rightwing pundits and former President loyalists swung firmly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the individuals shown in pictures have their faces blacked out.
Yet some are not, featuring high-profile individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, allowed some conservative voices to launch the attack.
“It’s quite rich how the Democrats falsely accused President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently said he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House has not been concealing these files for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and hide permanently. So they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response concluded.
Overall Conservative Comment Remains Subdued
However, overall comment on the political right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for action that came before the legislative approval to enact a bill mandating the files' release.
Loomer, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest proponents for a complete release. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative personalities were given hard-copy folders of materials that contained no previously unseen data.
