Seven accused members of German far-left organization stand trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist group along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for targeting sites in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E, became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger from the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
